IRON MAKING AND MINING IN MORRIS COUNTY
7:00 pm
Location: The Chester Library
250 West Main Street, Chester, NJ
The Chester Historical Society will sponsor a talk on "Iron Making and Mining in Morris County" on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 7 o'clock p.m. at the Chester Library, 250 West Main Street, in Chester. The program is open to the public free of charge, and refreshments will be served.
The presenter, Joseph J. Macasek, is the author of Guide to the Morris Canal, and is currently President of the Canal Society of New Jersey, and President of the Roebling Chapter of the Society for Industrial Archeology.
Mr. Macasek's presentation will be filled with pictures, maps, and diagrams that begin in the 1700s, when the highlands area of New Jersey was found to contain an abundance of high grade magnetite iron ore. He'll explain how, with the completion of the Morris Canal in 1831, the mining business began to expand. And how, in the 1870s when the Central Railroad of New Jersey's High Bridge Branch reached Chester, the village became an iron mining boom town.
Follow the history to learn that mines in Morris County continued in operation well into the 1900s. It is estimated that more than 55 million tons of ore were mined and shipped. In this talk we will learn where the mines were located, what kinds of technology were used, and how the miners lived and worked.
