Black River Industry and Nature Walk

Discover the early industries along the Black River with Joe Macasek, an industrial archeologist. Explore the flora, fauna and the ecosystem with naturalist Janis Slutsky. This is a 3.5 mile moderate walk along the Hacklebarney branch of the old railroad, lower millpond, a 1930's hydro-electric plant, powerhouse, and the newly restored Kay's dam. The hike meets in the Cooper Gristmill parking lot.

Annual Chester Family Day

All children and families in Chester are invited to come together for a memorable day for the entire community at Municipal Field (Gazebo Park) on Saturday May 11, 2013, rain or shine.
The day will start with a parade down Main St followed by a complementary picnic lunch or hot dogs and hamburgers. The highlight of the day will be a vintage baseball game who play 19th century rules, with vintage equipment and old fashioned uniforms.

The History of Chester's Railroads at Chester Library

On Saturday, May 11th at 10 a.m. at the Chester Library, The History of Chester's Railroads will be presented, and we will discuss how their growth was influenced by the development of the 19th century iron industry.
Speakers are Larry Lowenthal, a retired National Park Service historian and author of "Chester's Iron Heyday". Also providing insight will be Joe Macasek, a professional graphic designer with a special interest in historic interpretation, and Bill Greenberg, an independent historian, author and co-author of several books on transportation.
This program is co-sponsored by the Chester Library and the Chester Historical Society. These knowledgeable gentlemen will be on hand to discuss their books and sign copies on request. A great learning experience!

People-Power Day

Tour Cooper Gristmill and watch demostrations of tools powered by hands and feet. People-powered tools were typical of the 1890's in Milltown/Chester Township before electricity was available. You will see displays of the foot-powered scroll saw, one and two man saws, stone jack, treadle sewing machines, and hand drills as well as have the opportunity to try some tools yourself.

PEDAL FOR PRESERVATION

The Land Conservancy of New Jersey (TLC-NJ) is hosting its second annual Pedal for Preservation Bike Event along the Columbia Trail. Families, recreational and avid cyclers can enjoy this shaded Rail-to-Trail ride through picturesque small towns in rural Morris and Hunterdon counties.
Riders will start and finish at West Morris Central High School, 259 Bartley Rd, Chester, NJ 07930.
Registration for the event is now open. Sign up by 4/30/13 and take advantage of the early registration discount!
$20 for individuals & 15 for children (12-18)
$25 after April 30th
Become a Champion for Open Space and team up with TLC-NJ by participating as a rider, team member, sponsor, donor or volunteer. Pay a flat registration fee or help fundraise by getting friends and family to sponsor your ride. Registration on the day of the event begins at 8:30am.
